It was because LEDs were not as energy efficient as they are today. The LEDs would burn out if the manufacturer increased the brightness. I have seen first-hand how manufacturers wasted a lot of time and money testing early LED floodlights because they burned out in a matter of a year. They are now more efficient and last longer. This blog will explain what LED floodlights you should buy and the specs to check before purchasing.
LED Chips: I’m sure you can agree that SMD LED floodlights last longer than COB LED lights. As you can see from the image below, SMD floodlights use many smaller LED chips instead of one large LED chip. This allows them to operate at a lower temperature, preventing the LED flood lights from burning out.
Wattage – It’s important to choose the right brightness and coverage. Some flood lights are more efficient than others. It would be best if you used lumens, not wattage when working with most LED products. LED floodlights can jump a large amount per wattage, so they all do roughly the same thing. The following is a rough guideline to follow:
Beam angle – This is a point that you should consider since almost all LED Flood Lighting has a wide 180-degree beam angle. Many customers have told us that their flood lights are brighter than expected and may light up neighbors’ backyards. Install the LED flood light in the center of the building, or use two smaller LED floodlights on either side. The higher up the LED floodlights are installed, the greater the beam angle.
LED Sensor Flood Light –Most LED flood lights come with an option of a sensor or the ability to connect an external sensor. A sensor LED floodlight is an excellent option, as it allows you to save energy and change the sensitivity and duration of the floodlight. A dusk-to-dawn sensor is another option for a sensor LED floodlight. This will ensure that the light only comes on when it’s dark and turns off at dawn.
IP Rating – Look for a minimum of IP54 LED flood lights, and preferably an IP rating higher than 65 to prevent water or dust from entering the fitting. Since LED floodlights have been built-in, you’ll need to replace them all if they fail. So, make sure that you choose a high IP rating.
Brand- It is important to buy lighting that has a quality brand. As we discussed in our last point, LEDs are integrated into the lights. You want something durable. Flood lights are available in a wide range of quality and price. It can be not very clear.
Color Temperature – This is an important consideration to make as it will change the application considerably. You can achieve a bright and clear application by using a color temperature of around 5500k Kelvin. This will produce a pure white. This temperature is ideal for carparks or sporting fields. You can choose a warmer 4000k if you prefer. This will have a more natural light that will work in almost any application. If you are looking to create a more relaxed atmosphere, then a warm white 3000k will do the trick.
