If you’ve been following us for some time, you’ll know that we are passionate about writing about the process of choosing and hanging artwork. Perhaps “love” isn’t the right word to use. We may just be aware of the difficulty it is to find art, then purchase it and then display it in an aesthetically pleasing manner, so we’ve decided to make it our mission to come up with solutions and share them. That’s why we have a myriad of posts from our archives like How to Hang Art correctly, DESIGN MIStake Different Walls, the Same Art designs, How to actually create a Gallery Wall, 7 Unexpected Places I Love To Hang Art The 7 Things You Should be aware of before attempting to hang that gallery Wall The list continues. Then, when Emily was filming EHD photographer Kaitlin’s basement reveals and noticed that Kaitlin’s house was gorgeously constructed, with only one thing art, she realized that this was a typical pattern. A lot of people feel that choosing art is one of the biggest challenges of creating a house or even a room. I was wracked by our gallery for nearly a year before I was able to finish it (and I think that I found the courage to finish it since I had a strict deadline). My time working at EHD did not help me to face the rigors of selecting and hanging artwork. Sometimes, all we require is to get out of our heads for a bit and play playing around. Today, with Kaitlin’s home as a model and empty walls, I will show you how art can alter an area using the old technique of Photoshop. Through this, I hope to show that finding quality, inexpensive, beautiful art is not as hard as you imagine.
THE CANVAS – KAITLIN’S HOME WITH NO ART
Welcome to Kaitlin’s house (and a huge thank you to Kaitlin, who kindly invited us to her home). The house is adorable and well-styled and decorated (as you can tell, she is a discerning lady). However, without artwork, the walls seem somewhat sad, and there’s a feeling that something isn’t there. Kaitlin has said that she has trouble choosing art since it is difficult and enduring. It’s not just her. We are often caught in our minds about what the artwork we pick conveys regarding us. We are often enticed into thinking that the artwork on our walls should reflect our personality. Folks, I’m here to tell you that it does not have to be this in the least. Art definitely can reflect your personality, style, and even your beliefs; however, it doesn’t need to do so. It’s okay to hang art if you love it! It’s as easy as that.
It is often believed that people who care about art should be under pressure to purchase art at a gallery or to purchase originals. If you have the chance and resources to make it happen, it’s great, but this isn’t the sole option to decorate your walls with high-quality art. As you’ll see in the next section, large-box stores such as Target, West Elm, CB2, Crate & Barrel, and others have amazing art choices that will completely change the look of your walls. Also, there are some wonderful vintage and secondhand choices for sale on Etsy and Chairish, and, of course, you can find amazing art from Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and flea markets. Artwork that is beautiful doesn’t have to cost you a fortune; I’m telling you, my dears.
If you think there is any formula that you can follow when designing a space with art, The answer is yes! Typically, rooms are adorned with at the very least four walls. To make your room appear more organized and alive, play around with the different styles of artwork on your walls. For instance, you don’t have to put one big horizontal piece of art on each wall. This could make your space appear like the inside of a museum. You can instead select one of the following to decorate each of the walls
After you have become comfortable with the dimensions and space, I’ll share some of our most favored art pieces and how they might be set up within a space. We’ll go over the options.
MINIMAL AND NEUTRAL ART
In the beginning, I put together an uncluttered and neutral art design that accentuates the calm and relaxed feel of the room. It also highlights the woody light tones throughout. The start of this style was with the stunning layers of paper in the dimensional diptych. It’s minimalist and attractive and has an industrial look. it was large enough to fill the huge blank wall. It is possible to purchase them individually, but when you buy them together, they create a unified look that is appealing to the eyes. To complement its soft nature, I picked this “Mountain High I” Print with a wood frame that is light. I love the way the black strokes reflect against the dark accents that are coming from the fireplace and bookcase. For added motion and texture, I have added this decorative bowl with a wrinkle which brightens the mantel and adds a sculptural component.
Natural Daisy Chain Wall Art
As we discussed above, This wall required something more than the traditional triptych or diptych to make the space feel alive and vibrant. Large or medium-sized pieces were the ideal choice in this case, and I am in love with this piece of the Leanne Ford x Crate And Barrel collection. It’s made of cotton fibers for an interesting texture, as well as some motion.
As you will see, the art on the opposite part of the space is very close together, making it important to find artwork that is akin to one another but is not too alike in size, subject matter, or design.
Natia Oak Round Wall Mirror
On the opposite wall adjacent to the stunning wooden room divider that was slatted, There was a vacant space over this plant stand. It might have been better left unattended. However, a mirror seemed as a good method to draw your attention. Hanging mirrors is among our top “tricks” when finding the ideal art piece seems impossible. Mirrors make a space feel larger and bounce light throughout the space (which is crucial for rooms that lack sunlight).
Because of the open layout of Kaitlin’s house, The dining room is accessible from the living space, which is why it made sense to continue this experiment on the walls. To add an additional height and decorative element to the wall that is to the right, the ladder was the ideal solution. The arch is a fake architectural feature, and the wood color is gorgeous. The wall is on the opposite wall. This 4 piece grid creates a wall beautifully and creates an overall, unified look.
