Here are our eight staircase lighting ideas to inspire you for your home. When considering staircase lighting, the design, construction, and desired effects are the key elements, along with finish and texture. A staircase is the central spine of your home, linking spaces and people together. It should be functional and sculptural, and staircase lighting can make a real difference.
In most cases, lighting on staircases isn’t purely a decorative theme; it also serves a simple function regarding safety. Glare should be avoided and maintenance considered, while interior lighting to enhance the form can add beauty and softness.
1. The first thing to consider when lighting a staircase should be adding wall recessed stair lights such as the Sirolo, Cazalla, or more Lucca 30. This can create a real wow factor, whether in stone stairs or more classic stairs with runners. Here they are set higher for a wash of light over the stairs.
2. Here, miniature wall recessed Lucca 30 have been used every other tread to wash light over the track. Here they are placed closer to the steps for more of a skimming effect across the footprint. The slide alongside is optional!
3. A significant effect with plenty of impacts instead of a wall light would be to create a niche or series of places, as shown here. These can be lit with miniature Lucca 30 to add drama. Combine these with Sirolo stoplights for the perfect layered scheme for your staircase lighting.
4. the light source can be hidden from view under each tread for open riser staircases. When not illuminated, the Contour LED strip recessed into the underside of the step is invisible. When lit, it creates a beautifully soft floating effect. This ignites the tread below and casts beautiful shadows under the staircase.
5. Texture is a great feature to light in your home as it emphasizes its variations. This staircase goes from top to bottom of this new property, featuring a brick wall behind it. We conceal a warm white Contour LED strip on either side to maximize its impact. This not only shows off the height but also the warm color of the bricks.
6. Another way to light a textured staircase is to add an element of uplight to make a fundamental texture feature. Here Lucca 30 uplights add drama and light your way up the stairs.
7. Another way of adding localized light to a traditional or contemporary staircase is with a pendant in the center that drops between the treads. This can bring ambient lighting down the staircase’s length.
8. For the ultimate dramatic effect, conceal the Contour LED strip on either side of the staircase to lead your way step by step up the stairs. Or, for fun, add a color-changing option using our Contour RGB strip (Please ask Sales for more details). This adds an element of fun to your staircase lighting scheme. Select a multitude of colors to fill the space.
